Spotting wildlife: sloths, toucans and more

November 2, 2026

Costa Rica is home to an incredible share of the world’s biodiversity. With a little patience you can spot sloths, monkeys, toucans, frogs and more.

Go early

Animals are most active at dawn and dusk. A 6 am walk beats a noon hike every time.

Hire a local guide

Guides carry spotting scopes and know exactly where to look. A sloth that’s invisible to you is obvious to them.

Respect the wild

Never feed animals, keep your distance and skip any attraction that lets you hold wildlife. Pura vida means caring for nature too.
